Our story

Built in the US. Shaped by the Europe-to-America gap.

Royal Cheese is a branding and marketing agency based in Los Angeles. We help European companies adapt their position, brand and marketing for the US market, because we have lived the gap from both sides.

The work is practical. We help you decide what needs to change before the website, sales material and first campaigns reach American buyers. Then we help you make those changes happen.

Why this work is personal

Royal Cheese was founded in Los Angeles in 2018 by Olivier Gruère, a French marketer who had already spent four years working and building a life in the United States.

Before that, Olivier spent ten years at Technicolor, leading digital marketing projects for clients including Disney, Universal and Warner Bros. He moved to Los Angeles in 2014 on an L-1 visa, transferred from France. It was a strong job, a major move and a new life for his family.

Then, at the end of 2017, Technicolor let him go. The job ended abruptly. The visa clock was running. Going back to France was possible on paper, but it did not feel like a real answer. He had already seen enough of the US to know that the next move had to be his own.

Royal Cheese started in January 2018 with a business plan, a lot of urgency and no illusion about how easy the American market would be. That experience still shapes how we work with founders and teams entering the US today. We know the distance between a plan made in Europe and the decisions that have to be made once the market is real.

What we have learned from working on both sides

A European company can have a strong product, a credible history and a brand that works well at home. None of that guarantees that the market will understand the offer in the US.

The friction is usually not one dramatic mistake. It is a collection of smaller ones: a value proposition that takes too long to explain, proof that does not answer an American buyer’s question, a website that reads like a translation, a marketing plan that treats the US as one undifferentiated market.

We help companies identify those gaps before they become expensive. We also know that the answer is not to make every European brand look like an American one. The character of the original brand often matters. It just needs to be expressed in a way the new market can understand.

Why "Royal Cheese"?

The name comes from two places. The first is the “Royale with Cheese” conversation in Pulp Fiction, a small joke about the way the same thing changes when it crosses the Atlantic. The second is Olivier’s name, Gruère, which is close enough to Gruyère, its ancestry, to make the wordplay hard to resist.

It has always been a useful name for this agency. It is French without pretending to be a stereotype, American without trying too hard, and memorable enough to start a conversation. We take that attitude into the work too: serious about the strategy, not too serious about ourselves.

What we believe

Strategy comes before execution

A new identity cannot fix an unclear position. More content cannot repair a message that makes no sense to the people you need to reach. We start with the commercial question, then decide which brand and marketing work will solve it.

Direct advice beats agency theatre

We do not tell a client that every idea is good. If the US plan is too broad, if the offer is not clear or if another partner is better suited to the work, we say it. The point of an agency relationship is to make better decisions, not to make meetings feel reassuring.

AI should make the work better, not less human

We use AI in research, content workflows, search and automation where it saves time or improves the work. People still set the direction, decide what is true and take responsibility for what goes out under a client's name.

The market has to be understood from inside it

We are based in Los Angeles, but we work with European teams across the US. Being here matters because the assumptions, buying habits and pace of the market are easier to see from close up. Understanding where the European team is coming from matters just as much.

Branding Makes the Difference. Especially in the Age of AI.

Branding has always been a differentiator. But today, it’s become an absolute necessity — and AI is exactly why.

The argument is simple. The moment anyone can produce decent-quality content in seconds with ChatGPT, Claude, or Midjourney, the things that used to differentiate (content quality, production consistency, SEO optimization) become a standard available to everyone. What can’t be replicated by AI is a brand’s unique identity: its promise, its voice, its angle, its personality, its consistency over time. Everything that creates an emotional connection with an audience. Everything that creates preference. Everything that drives purchasing decisions.

Our view: in an era where content becomes a commodity, branding becomes the only truly durable differentiator. And AI, used well, isn’t a threat to your brand’s singularity — it’s what allows you to deploy it more broadly and faster than ever before. Provided the brand work has been done seriously upstream.

Olivier GRUERE, CEO Royal Cheese Digital

Olivier has been building brands since 1998. He started in web at the end of the 1990s, founded his first digital agency in the early 2000s, then joined Technicolor for a decade of work on major entertainment and technology brands.

He founded Royal Cheese after moving to Los Angeles and has since worked with more than 150 businesses, from early-stage ventures to established companies and international brands entering the US. His role is to bring commercial clarity to the brand decisions that affect everything else: website, sales material, content, visibility and growth.

The approach is straightforward. Understand the business. Ask the questions others are avoiding. Build a clear answer that the market can use.

Based in Los Angeles. Not a local small-business agency.

Our US base is part of the value we bring to European companies. It is not the market we are trying to own for its own sake.

For a local Los Angeles founder or small business that needs a focused brand identity or website project, LA Branding Studio is the better fit. Royal Cheese is built for companies navigating the Europe-to-US transition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you only work with French companies?

No. French companies are a major part of our history and the cross-cultural gap we know best, but we work with European companies more broadly when they are building a serious US presence.

No. We work with companies preparing a US entry as well as teams that already have an entity, local hires or early customers. Starting before the launch can prevent costly brand and marketing decisions later.

No. Those subjects need specialist advice. We focus on brand strategy, identity, websites and marketing, and can work alongside the right legal, immigration, tax or operational partners when the project requires it.

Yes. Some clients need a defined market-entry project and a handoff to their internal team. Others continue with us for SEO, content, LinkedIn, YouTube or AI marketing support once the foundation is in place.
